A Few Words About Us

At Remedy Behavioral Health we are committed to providing optimal wellness to all patients by providing the highest quality of behavioral health services. We provide an integrated approach that focuses on the individual’s whole person and his or her unique psychiatric needs, backgrounds, situations, and personal goals.

Our team of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and social workers/therapists provide assistance in managing psychiatric symptoms, whether conditions are acute or chronic. Remedy’s primary goal of treatment, whether in our outpatient clinic or in our facilities, is to assist in decreasing a person’s distressing psychiatric symptoms in order to improve and maximize quality of life.

Dr. Gary Gay

Medical Director
Psychiatrist

After exploring other avenues, including attending pharmacy school, Dr. Gay went on to medical school with the intent of becoming a psychiatrist.  He graduated with Honors from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.  From there he completed his specialty training in Psychiatry at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and then at The Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital where he served as Chief Resident.  Dr. Gay is Board Certified in General Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology.  His experience is quite varied serving in hospitals, outpatient clinics, a residential crisis unit, substance abuse clinics and academic medicine.  Over 6 years ago Dr. Gay moved to southern Alabama and worked there for 3 years doing both inpatient and outpatient work before moving up to Northern Alabama where he calls “home.” Prior to moving to Alabama Dr Gay had his own private practice for 10 years in a semi-rural area about 25 miles north of Baltimore, MD.   Most recently, in Northern AL, he was medical director for behavioral health inpatient units in the Shoals.  Over the past 6 years, Dr. Gay has been heavily involved in teaching medical students the fundamentals of clinical psychiatric medicine. More recently, Dr. Gay was voted preceptor of the year (academic year 2020-2021) for his teaching of medical students during their clinical rotations in psychiatry.

Dr. Gay is pleased to join Remedy Behavioral Health, in Florence Alabama where he will serve as Medical Director and provide much needed psychiatric outpatient services to those in the Shoals and beyond.

Ruthann Allison is a dual-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-C) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C). She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a Post-Master’s Certificate from Liberty University. Ruthann provides care in both inpatient and outpatient settings and is passionate about delivering comprehensive, compassionate mental health treatment to individuals across diverse populations.

Nikki Davenport is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. She received an Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Columbia State Community College in 2010 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Middle Tennessee State University in 2014. She continued her education to complete her Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Family Practice in 2017 at Tennessee State University and her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2023 at East Tennessee State University. Her passion for mental health led her to complete a post-Master of Science Certificate as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Liberty University. She holds a position on the National Alliance on Mental Illness Committee of Education in Alabama, which allows her to increase the community’s mental health awareness. She has experience in burn intensive care, critical care, trauma intensive care, emergency medicine, family practice, and nursing education. Nikki’s passion is providing psychiatric care to the community and reducing mental illness stigma. She looks forward to caring for those in our community.

Tina McWilliams

Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker

Tina McWilliams is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with over 40 years of experience. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Alabama and continued her education by obtaining a Master of Social Work from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Tina has been a Supervisor, Program Director, Clinical Director, and Executive Director.

Tina has worked as a therapist with civilians, military members and their families, and Veterans and their families. She practices evidence based individual therapy.

Tina has experience working with adults with Depression, Anxiety, Relationship problems, Stress at work and at home, ADHD, Life Changes, Divorce, Trauma, PTSD, Grief, Substance Abuse, and Alcohol Abuse. Tina will be working at our outpatient clinic in downtown Florence, Alabama.

Kelly Clemmons is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) who is passionate about helping people navigate life’s challenges. She earned bother her bachelor’s degree in psychology and her master’s degree in Social Work from the University of North Alabama.

Kelly has experience supporting children, adolescents, adults and older adults through a variety of life stages and struggles. She specialized in working with anxiety, depression, ADHD, crisis situations, and anger management. Kelly’s goal is to provide a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered to grow.

Micheala Nunnelly is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She graduated from the University of North Alabama in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and minor in Sociology. She continued her education at UNA and obtained a Master of Arts in Counseling Degree in 2020. Micheala interned and worked in outreach services such as geriatrics and has experience as an in-home therapist providing home visits to patients. She has experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings by providing therapy and case management services.

With over 45 years of experience as a licensed professional counselor and board-certified school psychologist, Tom has dedicated his career to helping individuals navigate the complexities of developmental life transitions and mental health challenges. Embracing a solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral therapeutic approach, he excels at identifying problems and crafting meticulous, evidence-based treatment plans that lead to transformative results. Tom’s holistic philosophy passionately addresses the mind, body, and spirit within the therapeutic relationship, promoting both immediate and enduring change. His academic journey began at the University of Alabama, where he earned his MA and PhD in Counseling from 1972 to 1976, with minors in Educational Psychology, Educational Research, and Administration in Higher Education. His scholarly pursuits have yielded notable contributions, including peer-reviewed publications such as “Fatal Addictions: An Overview,” featured in EAP Digest (1991), and “A Cross-Validation Study of the Crites Career Maturity Inventory Scale,” published in the Measurement and Evaluation Research Journal in 1992. Tom’s unwavering commitment to his clients and his extensive experience make him a beacon of hope for those seeking meaningful growth and healing. Through his life’s work, he exemplifies the profound impact that one dedicated professional can have, fostering resilience and wellness across mind, body, and spirit.

Dr. Timothy Carpenter

Psychiatrist

 Timothy Carpenter DO is a psychiatrist, board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Addiction Medicine.  He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Mississippi in 1993.  He completed his medical education at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 1997 and his psychiatric residency at the University of California – Irvine Medical Center in 2001. After completing residency, he practiced in the Los Angeles, CA area until returning to the south in 2015.  He has practiced in Alabama since that time in outpatient, inpatient, long-term care settings.

Shanquail Horton holds a Doctorate in Nursing and is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. She received her Doctorate in Nursing from Troy University in 2020, a Master of Science in Nursing as an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner from the University of South Alabama in 2013, and a Post-Graduate Certificate as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Liberty University in 2021. She has been practicing in the field of adult and gerontology for 15 years. She has extensive experience in treating adult and geriatric patients in skilled nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and specialty care assisted living facilities.

Crystal Cal is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2013 and continued her education to complete a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2016. She has been practicing in the field of psychiatry since 2017 and currently practices in the outpatient and inpatient settings.

Haley Hazen is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Alabama in 2017. She continued her education to complete a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of North Alabama in 2021. She obtained board certification in 2021 through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Haley has experience in practicing in inpatient & outpatient settings treating a variety of psychiatric illnesses.

Dorothy Lavender

Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner

Dorothy Lavender is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Jacksonville State University in 2001. She later completed her Master of Science in Nursing at Walden State University in 2015. She has been forwarded the opportunity to provide exceptional medical and behavioral health care to the adult and geriatric population. Over the past seven years, she has tremendously enjoyed providing care to this specified population in such settings as Skilled Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities, and Specialty Care Assisted Living Facilities. She takes great pride and stride to ensure that her patients receive remarkable care. 

Karen Metz

Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner

Karen Metz is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. She received an Associate of Science in Nursing from Wallace State College in 1994. Karen worked as an RN for 17 years. She continued her education to complete her Master’s Degree in Nursing Science from The University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2011. She has more than 10 years of experience as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner, working with adults and geriatrics. Karen has 7 years of experience in treating adults and geriatrics in Skilled Nursing Facilities.

Octavia Scott is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2015. She continued her education to complete a Master of Science in Nursing in Population Health with a concentration in nursing education from Jacksonville State University in 2021. In 2022, Octavia received a post Master of Science Certification in Family Nurse Practitioner from Auburn University. She has lengthy experience in critical care, case management, surgical services, dialysis, psychiatry, and trauma.

She started her career as a registered nurse on the Progressive Care Unit before transitioning into Psychiatry in 2017. She continued her education to complete a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of North Alabama in 2020. She obtained board certification in 2021 through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Shannon has experience practicing in inpatient units for the adult and geriatric populations, as well as, correctional facilities, treating a variety of psychiatric illnesses.

He continued his education to complete a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of South Alabama in 2003. He completed his doctorate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2011. He completed the Post Master’s Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing at the University of Cincinnati in 2022. Eric has extensive experience in treating adults and the geriatric population. He has been practicing in various skilled, long-term care, and assisted living facilities since 2004.

Leah Chandler is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She graduated from Birmingham Southern College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Psychology. Leah received a master’s degree in Social Work from Florida State University in 1999. She has worked in the hospital inpatient system for 11 years in case management, adult psychiatry, and geriatric psychiatry. Leah has also worked with at-risk youth, therapeutic foster care, Hospice care, grief support for children and adults, and in private practice.

Jessica Barnett is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW). She graduated from the University of Montevallo with a bachelor’s in social work and psychology. Jessica received a master’s degree in social work from the University of Alabama. She has worked in the hospital inpatient and outpatient settings for 14 years as a medical social worker with a focus on palliative and supportive care. Jessica holds the Advanced Palliative and Hospice Social Work Certification (APHSW-C) and is an Advance Care Planning Certified Facilitator.   

Wendy Gardner

Wendy is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LICSW) in the state of Alabama. She graduated from the University of North Alabama in Social Work and Auburn University in Psychology. She works with individuals and families. She has 15 years of hospice experience in a variety of settings. She specializes in bereavement services (individual and group); Phases-of-Life changes, grief, and loss; Life-Stressors and next steps: and Crisis Intervention.
